UNITED NATIONS IN NAMBIA

The United Nations (UN) System in Namibia has designed a website with the intention to disseminate to the public at large information on its structure, mandate and programs. The UN is present in the country with programme and/or funding agencies such as  Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Volunteers (UNV), the World Food Programme (WFP) and with specialised agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the International Organisation for Migration (IOM),  the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) The site provides information on each single agency, individual mandate and programme as well as on the UN common objectives and activities. While each of the UN agencies in Namibia is responsible for the development, oversight and management of its own respective activities, within the framework of each agency’s
mandate and decision process, the site describes the instruments and mechanisms through which the UN System as a whole, in dialogue with the government, civil society associations and donors strives towards the achievement of the two strategic objectives, namely poverty and inequality reduction and HIV/AIDS containment. Some history and recent events, including an overview of the long presence of the UN in Namibia and its support for Namibian independence as far back as 1946. The site also includes links with the headquarters home page of each agency, thus enlarging the information available and facilitating its access.
UNITED NATIONS RESIDENT COORDINATOR SYSTEM
The Resident Coordinator System (RCS) encompasses all organisations of the United Nations System (UNS) dealing with operational activities for development at country level regardless of their formal presence in the country.
